School of Social and Community Medicine

Welcome to the home page for the University of Bristol School of Social and Community Medicine. The School was created on 1st August 2010 with the merger of the Departments of Social Medicine and Community Based Medicine. This is a temporary page while we link things up behind the scenes.

The School of Social and Community Medicine is a leading centre for research and teaching in population health sciences.  Research in the School is collaborative and multi-disciplinary, with staff coming from a wide range of academic disciplines and clinical specialties. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the School’s research was rated extremely highly, with 35% of Epidemiology and Public Health research rated 4* (world leading); and 80% of Health Services Research, 70% of Primary Care research and 60% of Psychiatry research rated 3* or 4* (world leading or internationally excellent).

Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes provide training and career development for undergraduate medical students, primary care/psychiatry/public health/paediatric and surgery trainees, other clinicians, and research staff. The postgraduate Short Course programme is a popular source of short courses in research methods and skills. There is an active programme of research seminars in term-time.
